AI REDGIO 5.0: Pioneering the future of manufacturing with AI at the Edge
AI REDGIO 5.0 is an ambitious EU-funded project, stemming from the Made in Europe Partnership, leading the digital transformation of European manufacturing SMEs through Artificial Intelligence at the Edge. Bringing together 43 partners from 18 countries, the project extends the successful legacy of Horizon 2020’s I4MS and AI REGIO initiatives, which empowered SMEs to embrace Industry 4.0 technologies.
AI REDGIO 5.0 has been advancing these achievements toward Industry 5.0, where technology serves people, sustainability, and resilience. By connecting regions, European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs), and manufacturing SMEs, the project creates a powerful ecosystem fostering innovation across Europe.
At DMIW, we have been working on the testing and validation of a unique AI Operator support system, using a replica of a real-world production process from the Aerospace industry, to investigate the applicability of AI driven support systems in an automated manufacturing environment.
The concept behind the solution is to capture and preserve Operator knowledge and use it to support decision-making and process improvements by capturing sensory (subjective) data and combining this with time-series (machine) data, and other environmental sensor data to populate a process knowledgebase – accessed through a decision tree model.
The resulting Human-in-the-Loop solution is a prototype ‘hybrid’ solution of Human and Machine data and represents a novel step in data-driven decision-making in industry.
The experiment also examines the legal, ethical, and human-centric dimensions of using AI technologies, ensuring responsible deployment and compliance with regulatory standards in industrial settings.
Technical Director Rae Davies commented:
“Along with our other (E)DIH experiment partners in the network, what sets this experiment apart is the commitment to security and control, embracing the "test before invest" paradigm and ensuring that future solutions are fit for purpose in industry.
As the AI REDGIO 5.0 programme draws to a close in December 2025, we look forward to sharing the results of this exciting experimentation.”
